Roopa Mahadevan

Born and raised in San Jose, California, USA, Roopa is a trained
Carnatic vocalist and Bharathanatyam dancer. She has received her
training in Carnatic music from Smt Suguna Varadachari of Chennai, and
Smt. Asha Ramesh of San Jose, imbibing the traditions of the Musiri
Subramania Iyer and D.K. Jayaraman schools, respectively. She has been
trained in Bharathanatyan by Smt. Indumathy Ganesh, a student of Smt.
Chitra Visweswaran. Over the last 1.5 years, she has resided in
Chennai, undergoing advanced Carnatic vocal training as a recipient of
the prestigious U.S. Fulbright scholarship. Roopa has given Carnatic
vocal concerts in several major sabhas in Chennai, Bombay, Delhi,
Kerala, Mysore, and more. She has been performing in the popular
December music season in Chennai for the past three years.  Through
Prakriti Foundation, Roopa has also presented cross-genre musical work
and given lecture-demonstrations in various venues in Chennai. Roopa
has provided her voice for Bharathanatyam performances of the Abhinaya
Dance Company (Bay Area), Shakti Dance Company (LA), Mythili Prakash,
and Abhinaya expert Bragha Bessel.

Aside from South Indian classical art forms, Roopa enjoys acting in
amateur theater and performing R&B/pop/soul music. She is featured on
two urban hip-hop/R&B music albums, "Lovespeak," by Everyday People A
Cappella and "Bring Back the Nyte," by Inphanyte Records of Stanford
University.

Roopa received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in biology and
psychology from Stanford University, California. She sees the
performing arts as an exciting medium through which to negotiate and
express the complexities of our contemporary global existence, and she
looks forward to exploring new works.
